No Sex or Drugs?

So as many of you know I have finally got to see a long time dream achieved in the past few months. What started off as an idea for a home goods store quickly shifted in to an collective arts space out of the necessity to make my own work around other creative people. Near downtown OKC in the Historic Plaza District, “The Society,” which simply means “a group of people coming together for common interests,” currently has 5 artists using the space as their studio and thriving in productivity and community involvement. Our goal at The Society is to be a community driven, collective art space that serves as a utopia for artists, rent-paying or not, to see their biggest ideas fulfilled. We are fortunate that we are not going unnoticed. For our launch party we had some really great write ups and coverage that included The Norman Transcript, Oklahoma Gazette, NewsOK, KSBI afternoon show, OklaVision, a several others that had really great things to say. The latest bit of coverage was my Alma Mater who paid a visit this past week to see what we’ve been up to. To my past professors, hopefully this is a bit of evidence that my art degree has not gone unused like many do. I love that the article is bold enough to say something to the affect of, “The Society is like Andy Warhol’s Factory without the sex and drugs.”  Did I say that?  Probably.  Anyway, great to represent UCO with something other than football news. click to photo below to check out the article.

The other print article I really enjoyed was from The Norman Transcript.  Kendall Kalashnikov did a killer job on the article and really become as much of a fan of us as we became of her!  Check that article out by clicking the image below.

It is crazy how fast all of this has moved.  The idea for the space is about 7 years old but the actual name and plan is only 4 months or so old.  I have been in the space myself for only 2 months and we have had artists working for a meager one month.  It’s crazy how doors have opened and needs met.  I guess OKC is a little more thirsty that I thought they were for a place to join in community, express themselves, create, sell, buy and support the arts.

I am going to try to keep up more with blogging because honestly, there is so much to share lately.  I hope to see you back here soon!
