Shout out to Jabee and cheers to great convo and collaboration

Click the image below to check out Jabee, a fellow artist and creator of some epic mixes (”How To Fly” is so rich).  Looking forward to changing it up and having no reservations on what can happen with two people walking two different paths.  We happen to run in to each other today at lunch and we both left excited about some new ideas and happenings coming August.  So keep your ear to the ground and an eye out for JABEE and myself, JERROD SMITH.  Rolling with Momentum in OKC.

NEWS:  Recent Publication and Feature

Picture 1

I am honored and excited to share with you  some recent news I have received. This past week I was chosen by curator Samantha Levin of Anagnorisis Fine Art and Curator for White Rabbit in the Lower East Side, NY through Brooklyn Art Project to be featured digitally at Brooklyn Art Project’s booth at Verge Art Brooklyn during NYC’s Armory Week.  This week is one of the biggest for artists in the nation and is attended by thousands of art collectors and enthusiasts.  In addition to this honor I will also be featured in the Premiere issue of BAP Quarterly in April 2011.  This full-color publication will be exquisitely printed and features 100 artists, chosen from hundreds across the world. Check out the piece they chose and the other artists HERE.

from the curator:

Choosing art for the first issue of the BAP Quarterly was no easy task. There were literally hundreds of excellent entries from around the world to choose from. In the end, I chose an eclectic mixture of works that evinced a mixture of high technical chops, alluring concept and great composition. Drawing, painting, multi-media, sculpture, illustration, etc – the quarterly will be comprised of almost every medium and style of art that reflects the community of Brooklyn Art Project. Congratulations to all of our selected artists. We’re proud to have include you as members of our global creative community.”

Friday, January 14th I will be featuring a new sketchbook series inspired by the idea that the animal world and human are not so black an white when closely examined.  The half human, half animal figures represent the grey in between what is considered animalistic and what is acceptable humanity.

This piece is the first of a series of pieces that will represent a predator vs. prey mentality.  The work was created to hang at eye level with 3 small 12″x12″ pieces hanging just below and to the left of the piece (very non-traditional hanging for a gallery setting).  The three smaller pieces will be white panels with small mice on them, scurrying to get away from the talons of the owl.  They will also be carrying small targets on their backs with straps that wrap around their shoulders like a backpack would.  This idea came to me when a gentleman in New York decided to stop me on the subway and tell me I have a target on my back because I had a map.  I starting thinking beyond his silly, passer-by comment and began to see the emotional targets we all carry and how, despite knowledge of potential pain, we enter in to friendships and relationships that open us up to vulnerability.  I am enjoying using the animal world to represent human feelings because in many ways we are very animalistic with the way we view food, sex, power etc.  Who knows where this journey and thought process will take me.

Joel and Morgan- Altered book

Joel and Morgan- Proposal Book

A few months ago I got a phone call from my good friend Joel Limpic informing me that he was wanting to propose to his lovely girlfriend Morgan.  His plan for the proposal consisted of somehow working in Morgan’s love for books (in this case a vintage book) with the beautiful vintage wedding ring and vintage feminine pocket watch.  The book and watch were such great symbols for the idea of representing their future story and the chapters that they had to look forward to and the pocket watch the symbol of time and the reminder to always cherish that.  With all of these elements and a quote from a song Joel had written we came up  with this gorgeous vintage altered book that he used to ask for her hand. I cannot take all the credit for this book however.  Joel was the one who brought all of the elements together while I brainstormed with him in how to make them all work with one another.  Joel hand cut all of the spaces for the elements to recede into the book and I assembled and attached the hardware and leather strap as a way to latch the book closed.  Then with an old typewriter Joel typed out his lyrics and together we found the perfect spot for them.  Thank you Joel for allowing me to be a part of your story together and for always throwing creative curve balls my way!

The piece and photos of Joel’s wedding were featured on a really great wedding blog.  Check it out here www.100layercake.com

New Commission

TREESWAY

This is a commission piece finished just recently called “And the Trees Sway In Time to the Rhythm of Our Hearts.”  This piece features a collaged photograph of a couple walking side by side, a hand rendered birch tree with pen, acrylic paint, charcoal and stains and a variety of layered vintage papers, sheet music, paints and wood laminates.   Derived from my thoughts on the idea of nature and how it inspires and opens up my capacity to love.
